Seepage Salamander
(Desmognathus aeneus)



DESCRIPTION:   1 1/2-2 1/4" (3.8-5.7 cm). Very small. Pale line runs from eye to angle of jaw. Wide tan, yellow, or reddish-brown stripe above has dark center line continuous with Y-shaped mark or series of dark smudges on back. Belly plain to mottled brown and white. Tail rounded, half of total length.

STATUS:

RANGE:    North Carolina to central Alabama

HABITAT:   Moist hardwood or mixed forests near small creeks, springs, and seepage areas; damp, shaded ravines.

SPECIAL HABITAT: 

FOOD:   Springtails, beetle larvae, mites.
