RANGE: Across North America and into northern
Mexico.
STATUS: Not a protected species
HABITAT: Near water such as streams and lakes, generally near
wooded areas or rock cliffs.
SPECIAL HABITAT REQUIREMENTS: Hollow trees, hollow logs, rock
crevices or ground burrows for denning.
BREEDING: Usually 4 young born in April or May.
FOOD: Omnivorous; eat fruits, nuts, grains, insects, frogs,
crayfish, and eggs.
