RANGE: Across North America.

STATUS: Not a protected species

HABITAT: Marshes, edges of ponds, lakes, streams, cattails, rushes, water lilies, open water.

SPECIAL HABITAT REQUIREMENTS: Shallow water and/or banks to build houses in.

BREEDING: Litter of 5-6; may have 2-3 litters per year.

FOOD: Aquatic vegetation, occasionally clams, frogs, and fish.
