Cave Salamander
(Eurycea lucifuga)



DESCRIPTION:   4 7/8-7 1/8" (12.5-18.1 cm). Slender, long-tailed brook salamander. Dull yellow to bright orange above; scattered black spots sometimes form 2 or 3 longitudinal rows. Belly yellowish and unspotted. Tail prehensile, clearly longer than body.

RANGE:   West Virginia and Southeast West Virginia, Alabama, west to Oklahoma.

HABITAT:  They are generally found in caves around limestone outcroppings. They can also be found along springs and streams in wooded areas.

FOOD:  The Cave Salamander's diet consists mostly of small arthropods and insects.
