RANGE: Across all of North America, except
southern California and southern Nevada.
STATUS: Not a protected species
HABITAT: Riparian habitat, especially those with Aspen, willow,
or alder growing along the banks of streams or rivers. Dams are
constructed to maintain a constant water level, a lodge of mud
and sticks is constructed within the flooded area to serve as
living quarters. On larger rivers tunnels are cut into the bank
of the river to serve as the lodge. Beavers live in groups
composed of families.
SPECIAL HABITAT REQUIREMENTS: Riparian areas with ample amounts
of willow or aspen for forage.
BREEDING: Litter of 2-4 born April - July.
FOOD: Beavers feed on bark and small twigs, aquatic plants,
sword-fern, pond weed, horse tail, waterweed, and yellow
water Lilly are also consumed.
