American Toad

DESCRIPTION: Normally 2-3 1/2 inches. Is
sometimes confused with Fowlers Toad, occasionally the two
hybridize. The American Toad has only one or warts in each of
the larger dark spots. Chest and forward part of abdomen are
usually spotted with dark pigmentation, enlarged warts on tibia
and parotoid gland either separated from the ridge behind the
eye, or connected by a short spur. A large middorsal stripe
might be present and almost plain brown, but others and females
especially sometimes are gaily patterned.
RANGE: Marinetime provinces, isolated colonies in
North Carolina
STATUS: An abundant "hoptoad" of the Northeast..
HABITAT: Habitats are legion. Ranging from suburban backyards to
mountain wilderness. Best suited is shallow bodies of water in
which to breed ( temporary pools or ditches or shallow portions
of streams).
SPECIAL HABITAT REQUIREMENTS: Hiding places where there is some
moister.
FOOD: Needs an abundantly supply of insects and
other invertebrates for food. |
